{"id":3764,"date":"2020-06-16T06:00:44","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T11:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southsidealive.com\/?p=3764"},"modified":"2020-06-16T07:27:23","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T12:27:23","slug":"word-pictures-of-the-church-greatness-in-the-kingdom-continued","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/southsidealive.com\/index.php\/2020\/06\/word-pictures-of-the-church-greatness-in-the-kingdom-continued\/","title":{"rendered":"Word Pictures of the Church &#8211; Greatness in the Kingdom (continued)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Yesterday, we began a discussion about the attitude necessary for ministering in the Kingdom of God.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">We saw the disciples struggling over greatness when they came to Jesus and asked him, \u201cWho is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?\u201d (Matthew 18:1-<\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">4).<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Actually, as Mark explains it, they were arguing like little children over which one of them was the greatest\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Mark 9:33\u201334 (NIV)<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">33<\/sup><\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, \u201cWhat were you arguing about on the road?\u201d&nbsp;<\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">34<\/sup><\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Of course, they all would acknowledge that Jesus was the greatest, but they wanted to be next in line for greatness.&nbsp; That would mean that they would be sitting on each side of Jesus when the kingdom was fully established.&nbsp; That desire was so great that the brothers, James and John, manipulated their mother in to asking Jesus to grant them those positions.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Matthew 20:20\u201324 (NIV)<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">20<\/sup><\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;Then the mother of Zebedee\u2019s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.&nbsp;<\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">21<\/sup><\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;\u201cWhat is it you want?\u201d he asked. She said, \u201cGrant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.\u201d&nbsp;<\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">22<\/sup><\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;\u201cYou don\u2019t know what you are asking,\u201d Jesus said to them. \u201cCan you drink the cup I am going to drink?\u201d \u201cWe can,\u201d they answered.&nbsp;<\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">23<\/sup><\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;Jesus said to them, \u201cYou will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.\u201d&nbsp;<\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">24<\/sup><\/i><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">The mother of James and John wanted what she thought was the very best for them: Fame, Power, Influence, Center-stage, Prominence.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">This led her to an attempt to manipulate Jesus (note the phrase, \u201ckneeling down.\u201d)<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Clearly, she was being used by her sons. When she was speaking, all Jesus heard was James and John talking through her. Jesus knew that mom was a mouthpiece for her sons. We know this because Jesus never answered their mother.&nbsp; Instead, He looked right past her and spoke to the brothers. (Note Jesus\u2019 response, \u201c<i class=\"yiv4868685944\">You don\u2019t know what you are asking,\u201d Jesus said to them.)<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Mark validates this because when he wrote about this incident, he doesn\u2019t even mention their mother.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Mark 10:35\u201337 (NIV)<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">35<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. \u201cTeacher,\u201d they said, \u201cwe want you to do for us whatever we ask.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">36<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;\u201cWhat do you want me to do for you?\u201d he asked.&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">37<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;They replied, \u201cLet one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Mark goes straight to what was really happening. These two brothers were trying to get an upper hand over the other disciples.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Talk about sowing division among the brothers\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Matthew 20:24 (NIV)<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><i class=\"yiv4868685944\">When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Of course, the only reason the other ten were indignant was that they hadn\u2019t thought of asking first.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">With everyone mad at everyone, this led Jesus to have to have a straight talk with all of them.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Matthew 20:25\u201328 (NIV)<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">25<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;Jesus called them together and said, \u201cYou know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">26<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">27<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;and whoever wants to be first must be your slave\u2014<\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\"><sup class=\"yiv4868685944\">28<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp;just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">If you are normal, you want to achieve greatness in some things: as a mom or dad, in your work, in your hobbies, in your character, in sports, in certain projects, in your church, etc.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">I want to be a great pastor and leader.&nbsp; I want to preach great sermons.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">A desire for greatness is very natural.&nbsp; It reflects the image of God within us. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with a desire of greatness as long as our desire for greatness is measured Jesus&#8217; way.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">Jesus points out that there are two view of greatness:<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; 1. The world\u2019s view of greatness.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv4868685944\"><span class=\"yiv4868685944\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; 2.
