Today, we conclude our consideration of, in my opinion, the greatest faith statement in the Bible. It is found in Habakkuk 3:11-19.

Habakkuk 3:17-19
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls,
18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
19 The Sovereign LORD is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
He enables me to go on the heights.

The final word in Habakkuk’s statement of faith is this…
Habakkuk 3:19
“The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, He enables me to go on the heights.”

To appreciate this amazing statement, you must understand how a deer walks.

When I was in college ministry, every year we would take students to Glorieta Student Conference in Glorieta, New Mexico. We would always take one day and drive to Albuquerque to go up on the top of Sandia Peak. We took a tram ride from the base to the top that was the largest unsupported span in North America, spanning 1.9 miles of cable with nothing in between. Often, as we looked out on the mountain range, we would see deer high up on the mountain standing on cliffs that seemed impossible for them to be there. How could this be?

It has to do with how a deer walks. Habakkuk is referring to us being like the hind feet of a deer. A deer never has to worry about where his back feet are planted because his back feet always slap right underneath where his front feet has already been.

Habakkuk is saying the reason we can go on the heights, that is, the reason he can walk into dangerous places is because where we step has already been tested by the Lord.

Habakkuk has no fear because he knows (by faith) that he can walk like the back feet of a deer, always sure that where he steps is safe because where he steps has already been tested for safety and security.

God goes before him in the high and dangerous places to protect him!

What an amazing way to end his statement of faith. Even if we see no signs of God working in our lives, we can still be joyful in God our Savior, knowing that He has tested the path to which He is leading us to walk.
