Genesis 2:8-9,15-17
Genesis 3:1-13
The story of God creating mankind and then the fall of man demonstrates a number of first for man. For the rest of this week, I will list 17 first times.
1. The First Responsibility God Gave to Man
Genesis 2:15
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”
2. The First Commandment God Gave to Man
Genesis 2:16-17
16 “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat,..”
Privilege and restriction
3. The First Warning God Gave to Man
Genesis 2:17
…”for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
4. The First Time Man Was Confronted by Satan and Deceived by His Crafty Ways
Genesis 3:1–3 (ESV)
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
“Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field “ (verse 1)
Satan as clever, subtle, and shrewd.
• The Crafty Question:
“He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” (verse 1)
* An Innocent Engagement
“And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” (verse 2,3)
Think about how Satan tempts us to take our eyes off of the many things we can do and to focus on the one thing we can’t do.
