Genesis 2:8-9,15-17
Genesis 3:1-13

The story of God creating mankind and then the fall of man demonstrates a number of firsts for man. For the rest of this week, I will list 17 first times.

1.  The First Responsibility God Gave to Man
2.  The First Commandment God Gave to Man
3.  The First Warning God Gave to Man
4.  The First Time Man Was Confronted by Satan and Deceived by His Crafty Ways

Genesis 3:4–7 (ESV)
4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

5. The First Time Man was Tempted to Doubt God’s Word

“But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.”  (verse 4)
Here, Satan mounts a direct assault on the integrity and truthfulness of God. Adam and Eve had to decide whether God or Satan was lying. They decided that God was.

6. The First Time Man was Tempted to Doubt God’s Motives

“For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (verse 5)

Satan offers a half-truth spoken in the whole truth. The ability to know good and evil is implied to be a good thing for man. Being like God is implied to be a worthy aspiration for man.

7. The First Time Man Sinned in His Thoughts

“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise.”  (verse 6)

The eyes are the window to the heart. John describes the real issue with Adam and Eve – who and what do you love.

1 John 2:15–16 (ESV)
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.

8. The First Time Man Sinned in His Actions

“she took of its fruit and ate,” (verses 6)
Disobedience

9. The First Time Man Collaborated With Another to Sin

“and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.” (verse 6)

10.  The First Time Man Felt Guilt and Shame Because of Sin

“Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.” (verse 7)
Genesis 2:25 illuminates their fall to shame: “And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”

11. The First Time Man Felt Alienated From Each Other

“And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.” (verse 7)
